Years ago the Duke University psychology department did an interesting experiment. They
wanted to study "survival." To do this they took some Norwegian warf rats and divided
them into two groups. The first group they put in a large container of water. They also
hooked up a spray of water on top of the container to spray into the faces of the rats who
would swim in the large container of water. One by one they took a rat and put it in the
large container of water and timed how long they would swim before they drowned.
THESE RATS WERE GIVEN NO CHANCE OF ESCAPE. The rats who were
placed in this hopeless setting were able to swim for approximately 17 minutes before
drowning.
A second group of rats were cast into the large container one by one, except this time, at
around the 15 to 16 minute point (just before they exhausted their strength), the rats were
rescued. When they had finished their study with this group, they found that rats who were
placed in the water, then saved, and then placed in the water again later (with THIS
TAUGHT AND ACQUIRED HOPE OF BEING SAVED), were able to swim 36 hours
until they drowned!
where there is hope......
