Which decision should be chosen?

Postby Bradtothebone » Sun Feb 14, 2016 3:50 am

Given three choices to make in any given context which would you choose and why?

1.The smart decision - This will get you the best results but not everyone with agree with it.
2. The right decision - This is what is morally right to do and is accepted by everyone.
3. The best decision - This is a mediation between the smart and right decision. Your results will be less than what the smart decision will get you but more people will find it as an ethical choice.

So its basically a choice between either doing what should be done, doing what people want to be done, or trying to find a middle ground.

(Feel free to rename the "Best decision" as its name may be unfitting or carry some bias. I just didn't know what to call it)

-2- The right decision does not exist, so you can eliminate that from the choices. This by default takes away the middle ground -3-, leaving you only with option -1-.

Give me an example of a moral decision where everyone is in agreement? Almost by definition morality are those cases where agreement is unobtainable. Think of the moral issues of the day, capital punishment, drug use, abortion? Everyone in agreement on those? If you have 100% agreement, then it is not a moral decision you are facing.

A classic psychology experiment (considered unethical now) was a scenario where a mother had a newborn during war. Hiding in a cellar with others, soldiers approach. The baby is crying, which may or may not give away the cellar. The mother must decide to smother her baby (1 death) or risk her life as well as X others in hiding (2 deaths + X).

Now if everyone or even the majority in the cellar agreed that smothering the baby was the correct decision, would it make it the moral decision?

This is one of the sticky points when you get into the scientific research on decision-making. I think you would really enjoy the trolley problem.

Maybe as you think about your initial post, how does the trolley problem and the hidden cellar problem adjust the options available?

I am rational girl, so I will always choose the option number 1. The smart decision. Maybe others wouldn't agree with me but I am perfectionist so the job and results comes first. Taking a risk too. Sometimes you have to make a compromise but final result at the end is most important for me.
