A person has the stated desire to be free from smoking. It is an unhealthy, costly habit. But to be free from smoking requires taking responsibility and putting in effort. This creates much discomfort with cravings and withdrawals. People try to avoid discomfort, they don't want to take responsibility. Hypnosis is seen as the easy, painless way to avoid taking responsibility.
I think what you say illustrates quite well what the attitude is of people towards responsibility.
And what makes you think that the origin of this quote is often wronlgy interpreted either Freud or Bryan Magee ?
