Depression at the Priory

A well-written and rather amusing (if you like black humour) account of one woman's experience of depression and the Priory clinic.

One comment that stood out for me was this:
One of my garrulous one-to-ones made a single comment that I found more helpful than anything I had yet heard. She said that "the suicidal ideation can be difficult to shift". I was able, for a few moments, to see this "ideation" as separate from my usual state of mind, more like a virus that was refusing to budge. For the first time I felt, albeit momentarily, that this might not be how I would have to feel for ever.

This illustrates again the vital importance of helping the patient remove symptoms from their core personality so that they can turn their resources against the problem.

And this:
I think the fact that this young psychiatrist trusted me to reduce my dosage helped turn the lethal tide. I felt I had been allowed the possibility of control again over my own mind.

The psychiatrist had tapped into her basic need for control, which to a great extent had been removed from her over the preceding months.
