Hi, as people may have noticed I've been giving a lot of advice in a short amount of time. Like many I have a long history of mental illness. Fortunately, I'm more or less better. I have vast amounts of personal experience but a relatively small amount of knowledge of psychological theories. I want to give people advice, but I don't want to give too much advice. I'd like some suggestions from people here with experience giving others advice about mental health related issues. Chances are I know most of the basic principles about giving advice. I would ask that people please look over a few of my posts, which are almost entirely advice related, before giving me any suggestions.

Hi Eerily Remains,

The kind of counselling you practise depends very much on one's opinion or better still one's assumptions on how the mind works and how it affects human behaviour. The various approaches is best learned in a systematic counselling course that usually exposes you to a great variety of counselling techniques. These courses help you to choose the kind of counselling that you want to develop.

In practice you'll find a great variety of counsellors although they may have many counselling skills in common. it is always important when studying counselling, what the major assumptions of a counsellor is. Mine is explained at:

Assumptions in Psychotherapy

Thanks for that information and the link, from what I've read so far your article may be very useful. I'm not exactly considering becoming a counselor. While medicine and some counseling have helped me get better, self reflection or simply learning from my mistakes has helped just as much. I’d like to try to help those who seem to be suffering from issues that I know about from experience, I don’t intend on speaking on issues I’m unfamiliar with. If you look over my posts it may seem that I’m all over the board, but the number of psychological problems I nothing about is just as numerous.
