Emotional Rollercoaster - Sympathy

Postby Michael Lank » Tue Mar 16, 2004 11:27 am

There was a programme on BBC Radio 4 this morning discussing sympathy; part of the Emotional Rollercoaster series.

I didn't hear the whole programme, but just a snippet on empathy, and research showing that people with lower emotional arousal around upset people were more likely to help them. Emotional Intelligence in action!

At radio 4's Emotional Rollercoaster webpage you can listen to the programme and test your sensitivity to disgust!

Next week's programme is on love. :)

Hi Mike!

We've been listening to the same radio programmes again! And you got your post in ahead of me again!

What's your excuse, anyway? Mine (today) is that I am ill in bed with something nasty going on in the chest, so I can listen to the radio without a qualm of guilt!

Hi Kathleen,

Seems we both have a fondness for Radio 4!

Excuses? I don't need an excuse..! Just lucky enough to be in a job where my work hours are flexible.

I hope your recovery is very quick and that you feel better soon. I find that a good way to recover is to watch daytime TV - it's so bad that I want to recover quickly so there's no chance of watching any more! (Actually, and please don't tell anyone, I do quite like Judge Judy - she makes me laugh!)

:D It brings me grear delight to hear that this sort of information is being played out to a wider audience.......it doesn't matter if you are helping a client, friend or relative; having low emotional arousal will enable one not to get tangled into the content of the issues within the problem, but be able to see the onerall pattern. It stops one jumping to conclusions too qwickly and allows for creative thinking around the problem.
I was reminded of this only this morning as a friend whose Sister is going through a very depressive and anxious time, she called me saying that she had been at the doctors with her .........both in floods of tears, she couldn't remember any thing that the doctor had said and ' couldn't think clearly.' we did some relaxing breathing exercises on the phone and it wasn't long before she was able to come up with a helpful plan for the next day or so.
