Counselling appointments at the same time each week?

Hi,

I'm new here but coming to the end of my counselling training. When I complete I want to work in private practice with skype and telephone counselling. but have not decided on a 'specialism' as such yet although my placement is in bereavement.

I was wondering what your thoughts were of the common practice of scheduling a client at the same time each week?

I understand this gives the client some stability which can be helpful but the reason I'm asking is that I will be working in another job Tue-Fri initially and so will only be available weekends and Mondays for counselling. Some weekends I'd be free to see clients but other weeks I wouldn't so Monday would be better.

Can the flexibility work with some client (particularly at the weekend when clients will have their own plans to work around as well), or is this a bad move?

Many thanks
Emma

Some clients have a strong preference for certain time blocks: weekdays, weekends, evenings, etc., and it's hard to move them from one to another. But if some of your clients are retired or are otherwise not working regular hours, they can be very flexible.
