I'm having trouble sleeping.....

Postby somewhere over the rainbo » Sat Jul 10, 2004 8:57 pm

For the last week I haven't been able to go to sleep until dawn. At night it's like I'm scared to death and I keep looking behind me and stuff. And I keep thinking that I'm seeing things that might not be there. I'm afraid to sleep and I'm afraid to turn out any lights and stuff. I don't even know why. It's like I get the feeling that someone's after me or something. :? How do I get over this?

Well...
This might help, put the computer in your room, and, put it on shut down, or put its setting so that the screen goes black after a certain amount of time, if the computer isn't being used.

And, what this helps is, is that, you have enough light to see in your room, but low enough to go to sleep, but the light(from the computer) will go out after your asleep, or close to it.

I'll have to convince my parents to put it in my room. But they have a laptop, so maybe they'll let me put that one up. I hope.

I've got a bedside lamp that has an automatic fader. It's mainly to emulate sunrise, it fades up gradually in the dark winter mornings. However, it also has a "sleep" type function so that it gradually fades out at night (to prompt you to go to sleep) over 15, 30, 60 or 90 minutes.

It was quite expensive (I went for a "posh" one), but I'm sure there are cheaper alternatives.

Something like that might help (I'd find the noise of a PC more of a problem).

The noise of a PC?
There should be enough space in the room to be able to sleep far away from it enough to not hear the noise.
And besides, the noise is minor...

I go to sleep with a fan blowing in my face every night, and fall asleep rather quickly.

Well, I think more importantly....what do you think the root of this problem is? Who do you think would be after you or would get you if you shut the lights out, or let yourself relax enough to fall asleep? Have you talked to your parents about this?

By the way, I also go to bed with a ceiling fan and another fan going to help block out noise and I also like it breezy in my room. That is a good suggestion though to try.

But what are your thoughts about when it is time for you to sleep? Are you reading or watching something scary for you that causes your mind to wander? I know I cant watch anything remotely scary by myself or I end up freaking myself out on every little noise.......and I also have to sleep with a light on if I freak myself out - ANd with my glasses on, which isnt too comfy. Therefore, I avoid scary stuff unless my husband is there too.

But what is going on with you to cause this fear?

My parents wouldn't let me put the laptop in my room. : \ I put on my closet light instead, but it still took me a long while to go to sleep. Maybe around 4:00a.m.... HOD, a lamp that has an automatic fader would be great to have. lol. If I ever find one of those I'm definitely buying one. : ) Happyface, I told my parents that I was having trouble sleeping, but that's all I told them. I really don't know why I'm so scared. I just always have the feeling that I'm being watched at night and I'm constantly turning around and I'm scared to go anywhere in my house that doesn't have a light on. I've tried going to sleep with music on or with the t.v. on, but those don't work either. If anything, it just keeps me more wide awake. I'll try turning on the fan tonight. And I avoid watching scary movies and reading books before I go to bed... because I know I'll have nightmares about them. I really don't know why I'm so scared. I just am.

fear of the dark, is a common fear, that exist in a lot of people some peroid in thier life usually younger years. fearing the dark can relate to fear of the unknown, If you can somehow get past this by conquering it a few times (sleepign succesfully in the dark) you may be able to do sleep fine w/o worries from then on.

ask yourself this, what are you concoiusly thinking about when your in the dark, Im almost certain that its you creating the fear with your own thoughts, so as an exercise try to think of something soothing and pleasent that makes you happys, in a way day dream yourself to sleep, maybe try to visualize yourself in the future where you would like to be and what you have acomplished just doing everything or anything you want to do in life. This has helped some people, just keep your mind busy in the dark because its really your mind thats getting to you not the dark, the dark is just the spark to this IMO.
