Why do we fear public speaking

Postby yslim45 » Mon Oct 29, 2012 6:18 am

Hi everyone,

I'm new here. Just want to contribute my two cents worth here. We all fear public speaking because subconsciously we want to put our best front forward. Including myself. The reason is simple. We want to perform in public speaking. But the more we want to perform the more we fear, because the voice inside our head will :" What if I look stupid" What if they don't like ME" its all about ourselves. But if we think in term of our audience our fears will diminish... for example " What do I want want them to take away from my speech? How do I help them to understand the topic involved? At the end of the day Public speaking is about serving others , not ourselves as long as we put in the effort to think what our audience can benefit from us, we will not fear as much.

We will still fear that's normal... I think :D

This has a lot to do with the overproduction of stress hormones and also a self-image issue. Please read:

The most probable cause of fear in speaking publicly is the crowd because public speaking deals with speaking in front of people and most people tend to have second thoughts about it when they are asked to do it with fear of speaking in front of people being the reason...

Some fear public speaking because they are afraid to face a crowd of people...

Hi SY Lim

You've absolutely hit the nail on the head! You're so right in saying that it's all about the audience. I couldn't agree more.

When you focus on the audience, and how your message will help them, it's much easier to keep nerves at bay and feel more confidence.

Well said! :-)

Public speaking is scary for a LOT of people. But it's something that the more you do of it, the better you deal with it. I don't think the nervousness ever goes away for many people.

Having said that, it greatly helps to know your topic well and that you believe in the message you're getting across to your audience.

If we'd first of all start to make the transition from doing something we fear into something we like to do. Let's start enjoying ourselves when we're out there. Seriously. After having made that change in your mindset, we can start thinking about techniques of how to improve our public speaking skills.

Even accomplished speakers will have some fear when they are about to give a speech, so some anxiety is necessary to avoid a flat presentation.

What happens is that for novice speakers we let this take over.
