'Dr Meldrum said GPs did not have the time, and were not properly trained, to offer the counselling support which could be provided by specialist services. '

Worrying but not surprising. I think that it's a great gap in GP training they're not taught or resourced to handle one of the most common illnesses that they'll encounter.

I wish that the GP service could 'plug in' to a holistic mental health team so that the NHS and complementary treatments could be integrated as soon as a patient asks for help.

Having worked with doctors, however, I cannot see this issue being purely about finance. GPs have a varied attitude to therapy and many still feel that counselling is only effective in mild cases of depression or as a helpful 'added extra' to medication. I believe any change in over prescribing has to start at the level of education and allowing GPs to experience the benefits of scientifically validated therpeutic intervention.
