Ugh. Presentations!! D:

Postby Sharon_j » Tue Dec 06, 2011 11:17 pm

Hi all.

I just need advice on how to calm my nerves when speaking publicly, especially as I recently started Sixth Form college and have been expected to do loads of presentations. Which I loath!! D:

The problem is I get super nervous so I forget half of the things that I'm meant to be talking about. It's annoying because it makes me look like I havent worked hard enough ... But the strangest thing is that I previously took part in stand - up comedy which was a strange experience because I was able to put on character that is the complete opposite to me. I couldnt remember half of the performance afterwards yet it made me feel great and gave me this temporary confidence ... However I cannot speak amongst groups of people, even talking to one person can be difficult.

So, is there any strategies I can use to help calm my nerves??

I'd much appreciate your help.
Thanks :)

see if you can get the drug propranolol prescribed to you. it is commonly used for public speaking anxiety. if your heart usually beats fast and you get sweaty and your words get jumbled it will help a lot. I did a presentation recently and used it and took away about 90 percent of the anxiety, I kind of felt bulletproof and just didn't care about standing up in front of people and talking

Hello Sharon_j,

As you well know, public speaking anxiety can really hold a person back. Some of my work is with public speakers and we might be able to remedy those feelings in minutes if you want. As an exception, I'm willing to help you at no charge if you are willing to take the help. Send me a message and we will see what we can do.

Try changing your view of public speaking. Think of it as a chance to show yourself off to the world. Dress your best and appreciate all the attention you are getting. Whenever I present something I think of how people are looking at me thinking I'm the greatest, with a great haircut, fashion sense, and excellent looks.

Regarding stuttering and forgetting what to say, try and realize the importance of what you're saying. Think of it this way, when someone tells you an amazing story do you care if they pause, stutter, or make grammatical errors or other small mistakes?

When I was younger, i'd be slightly nervous when doing any sort of public speaking, however I found that if you prepare well before and have excellent knowledge of your topic it becomes ridiculously easy, as easy as telling people your name and birthday.

My trick is just being super prepared. The less prepared I am, the more nervous I am... I rehearse in front of a trusted few people before I go in front of a group. Helps me get over nervousness and translate my thoughts into clear, un-stuttered spoken words

Practice and always be prepared and sure of what you’re saying. Enjoy it, have fun while you do it.Try not paying detailed attention to your audience.

Some times when you have a tool can help; things like using a projector for your presentation can help your channel the attention of people
to the screen rather that you, this can relax you a lot, also the fact that when using a projector you need to turn the light off also helps. :)
