new to psychology and considering it as a career

Postby skhasham » Sun Jan 18, 2015 2:24 pm

Hi all,

Thank you for having me on this forum.

I work in Human Resources (am in my 30’s) and am looking for a career change and am considering counselling psychology as I really enjoy helping people and regularly help to provide solutions/suggestions to friends. I am at the initial stage of looking into this and wanted to see if anyone could advise on the following:
- The key skills needed to be successful ?
- Common traits, strengths psychologists possess
- What a typical day might look like ?
- The quickest way of getting qualified ?
- The quickest way of getting into the field ?
- if there are opportunities to shadow a psychologist and provide any known contacts/organisations that may be willing to do this

Lastly, if there are any psychologists that wouldn't mind speaking with me on a call for 15 minutes or so to discuss this further that would be greatly appreciated (typical questions- is the role high pressured, is the field difficult to get into and earn a living, is intense studying involved, what the workload and structure may look and feel like etc).

My main concerns are- how long it would take to study (I have a BSC Honours in Multimedia Technology), being and staying detached, having a stable job in this field, the competition).

Any responses would be greatly appreciated and anything you could recommend would be great.
Thank you
Shy

I'm not necessarily labeled as a traditional psychologist, but I am qualified to answer your questions, as I make a full-time living serving others.

So, with that said, please take this response for what it's worth, okay?

- The key skills needed to be successful ?
Know yourself. Elicit stories anecdotes and processes and strategies that worked for you. The ability to simplify complex issues into every day language.

- Common traits, strengths psychologists possess
If you live it, you know it. If you know it, you can share a thought and coaching process with others so they too can get results. People pay for results.

- What a typical day might look like ?
Putting out fires is the easiest way I can express it. I look at myself as the chief fireman, and I give someone the tools they need to help themselves without myself becoming emotionally compromised. If they are in enough pain, they will listen and take action on your guidance.

- The quickest way of getting qualified ?
I'm in marketing and sales- highly correlated and all you have to do is get a commission-based job that relies on other people's efforts.

- The quickest way of getting into the field?
Network. If people like you they'll assist you along your way. You must clearly know what you want, however, because people won't refer someone who is uncertain or is perceived as temporary.

Hope this helps.
