Why not??

Postby nic » Fri Mar 12, 2004 11:25 am

Hello! Just looking to pick someones brain... I recently bought Paul McKennas "How to change your life in 7 days" It says in a warning at the front, that people suffering from clinical depression should not use the book or the hypnosis CD which came with it. Could anyone explain why this is? I bought it as I thought it may help me be more positive.

Hi Nic

The warning is a general one that you often see on hypnosis CDs. The authors have no control over who listens to their material, and are also concerned about possible litigation - you can imagine what trouble there would be if a newspaper headline reported that someone had made a suicide attempt after listening to such a CD! So their best protection is to say that such material is not intended for people who are experiencing severe psychological difficulties. A person who was experiencing depression might benefit from such a CD, and it might help them be more positive, but they should not rely on a CD alone as a help for severe problems.

That's my thoughts, anyway!

There used to be a belief among pschologists that depression shouldn't be treated with hypnosis, for some arcane reason that eludes me right now. It is now known that hypnosis is extremely useful in helping depressed people, as clinicians such as Michael Yapko promote. The outmoded idea, as so often in psychololgy, has persisted in some circles.

I suspect the reason Paul McKenna (a British stage hypnotist, as well as a trainer in NLP/hypnosis) is wary is because he was taken to court in 1998 by someone who was on stage in his show and claimed that the onset of schizophrenia was triggered by the effects of appearing on McKenna's show.

Paul McKenna won the case.
