The Power of Mental Strength

Postby Broderick Boyd » Fri Oct 31, 2008 9:28 pm

There are two main determining factors in whether or not someone is successful in a given activity. The first is intelligence. This is the amount, quality and speed of information stored, processed and retrieved in your brain. The second is strength. This includes the ability to deprive yourself, to resist temptation, to follow through, to endure, to tolerate to motivate and to inspire yourself. Both of these are equally important, however I have seen many people who seem to lack a sufficient amount of strength. This used to be a problem of mine also. I used to rely too much on intelligence and focused mostly on solving my problems with more information and with more thinking and learning. I found out a while back that this was only half of the equation and I was focusing my energies too much in one area. I then began a rigorous program of listening to my feelings more, listening to what they told me to do, and learning to use the word "no" more often to create boundaries for myself and others. I learned to resist the temptation to feel self-conscious or give in to another's expectations of me and I learned to stand up for myself and my own boundaries. Like any muscle, your mental strength must be exercised and it starts by learning how to say no to yourself and others.

More importantly is when to say no. Some things you should do, some things you give over to God (fate/life/whatever your beliefs) and others you should avoid.
The wisdom to discern what goes in which category is often the tough part.

To be successful in something unfortunately I think has little to do with intelligence. Intelligence can be our greatest enemy when it comes to success!

Most successful people are people that persevere in one given activity. What is it they say.... success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.

You need to learn how to say no. But you also have to learn to say YES to life and everything good that it gives you. Don't let any opportunity's fall between your fingers and you will be very successful!

Hi Guys,

You are trying to define a very broad topic in a few lines and I believe you are way off.

The definition of success is not necessarily linked to intelligence or to perseverance. Every person's definition of success is different and changeable with time.

This is a topic I am passionate about, and even after studying it deeply for years, I feel I am still just getting started.

I agree, would a budist monk think that collecting vast amounts of money is more successful than finding inner peace, its a very personal idea, what is becoming a success to one, maybe a poor idea living a life to another.

so how do you explain idiots with charisma? i have met plenty of idiots with charisma who have conned "smarter" people to do their work for them thus becoming more successful.

frankly i think the confidence you feel from being intelligent, and the feeling of strength, are simply the ingredients for your recipe to success. lots of people mistake their core competencies for something that might work for someone else.

I would say success starts with a decision - and I've noticed that successful people are good at making decisions.

It also requires being responsible, self confident, persistent and creative, with a "can do" attitude, having good communication skills and taking risks.
Don't know about intelligence - intelligence is difficult to define.

Taking action is the most important thing I think. It goes hand in hand with being decisive.

Success is defined as reaching a specific goal, to which there are two parts

1) having a clearly defined goal

2) intentional effort put forth to move towards that goal.

While intelligence isn't specific for either part it most certainly helps! Put it this way, if someone has the simple goal of becoming a millionaire, how will he figure out how to get there? What if the best thing he knows how to do is change oil in cars? The only other option then is to play the lottery.

However, the intelligence required is directly dependent upon the goal in mind.

Yeah this is great. I would add that this strength is an aspect of the heart. Intelligence is more of a mind/brain function, and strength is more of a heart function.
