Folks,
It’s the last day of August and our first taste of Autumn. The days are a little shorter, the spinning jennies are falling from the Sycamores across the road. Today there was a chill in the air as we looked for our morning post. There is a little moisture inside our windows on the cold glass. I write my name in it.
This week we had our chimney swept and I have been sorting out our big fireplace. Logs on one side and coal on the other.
Just now the weather is still good for riding my motorcycle on the hills, but it will gradually chill and I’ll add layers of clothing under my leathers. The kids will be back in school next week, and the roads will clear for some of the best back road riding of the year. The trees will lose their leaves and huge views will open up from the moors down to the sea. I love the time when I am the only biker in the beach bike park, and I can ride 20 miles on a clear road without seeing a car.
My wife has been bringing in produce from the allotment, mainly marrows, beans, tomatoes and raspberries. I’m filling the cider flagons with fresh brew from the farm. As John Keats said, it is the “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness.”
In our windy island there is sometimes a gentle Indian summer, a few weeks in autumn when the wind drops to nothing and the sun warms air that is so still, it feels like relaxation has bled into the veins of the world. Then suddenly there come the winds again and the leaves are gone from the trees overnight. The year has turned.
I feel it is a blessing to be in the world for another Autumn. Life is so very short.
How is Autumn for you?
Alex.
