Depression and REM sleep

Postby Mark Tyrrell » Tue Jun 29, 2004 5:09 pm

Interesting stuff http://www.psych.org/pnews/00-10-06/lack.html
Depressed adults can have their symptoms of depression alleviated through having less REM sleep however REM deprivation during feotal development may increase later incidence of depression.

Also the quicker we go into dream sleep the more likely we are to become depressed http://behaviorhealth.org/link_between_ ... _depre.htm

What I wondered about in the second article was the cause and effect - that going quickly into REM sleep caused depression, rather than vice versa that people who are depressed go quickly into REM sleep.

Although it says that the link was true even for people who felt fine, these people may have had a high level of emotional arousal, but not been depressed.

Fascinating - I wonder if the first link research took account of Joe Griffin's work.
