"The victimization culture of today's psychology has done a great disservice to too many people. Somewhere along the way, therapists forgot to teach their patients that the 'right to have your feelings' does not mean the right to act like a raging a**hole."

This in a nutshell is what I have been thinking of lately. I want to be a psychotherapist and with that attitude I'm not likely to be a popular one. What am I to do now? Gawd, I've to reconsider my career options. Damn it.

You'd be surprised. Honesty is always in short supply, and it has a real appeal.

33,333 views of this thread? I know off topic, but wow.

As to be on topic. NLP is pseudoscience that is a fad that will last another couple decades and then fade. Stay away from psychiatry, there will be a backlash over the pill for every ill culture post baby boom generation. I would recommend capitalizing on this backlash, helping the X-generation get off prescription needs.

The views...I know! How is it so popular? Anyhow. Yes, that's an interesting suggestion, even more so, because I'm convinced that there's no need for the vast majority of people to be on medication they are on, and I do feel passionate about it. NLP.. I'm not so sure it's very credible, I'm not getting a good feeling about it. As for psychiatry, it's hopeless in it's approach IMO.

Hi

The best way to become a good enough therapist is to enter into therapy yourself. Anything else is of no benefit to your client/patient.

Yes, I have undergone a considerable amount of therapy (is therapy measured in amount, lol?) which has been very helpful in understanding what it is like to be a client. From that I've also learned to appreciate the skill, expertise, experience and passion for the job that is required to be a good therapist. Besides, where I live, they don't qualify people as counsellors and psychotherapists, unless candidates have undergone a minimum of 20 sessions of personal therapy, which is an excellent requirement.

Interesting. Do you think they would allow me to count each visit to my local pub as a session?

Erm...it depends how committed you are during the sessions. If it's only a half arsed effort, then no, they definately wouldn't let that be taken into account. You know, you'd really have to prove your commitment. I'd say it could be argued that pub crawl or something of that sort would be counted as a session, but then the frequency is also important. If you demonstrate you're serious about your endeavours, I dunno if accreditation authorities for therapists would take you seriously, but I'm sure the aa would be delighted to have you.
