Speaking Opportunities???

Postby Gixzard » Thu Jun 06, 2019 4:18 am

Hello new here and I have a question I think you can help with. I’m brand new to public speaking and wanted to get over the fear of it. The thing is the only way to do that is to actually speak in public. Where do I practice?

I’ve looked online and have found a few different sources that say toastmasters and public speaking class in college. Then there were public libraries, chamber of commerce in city, and volunteering. That’s all helpful and I will try it. But I’m looking for more ideas. I’ve thought through it and can’t think of more. You all have experience in this which is why I decided to come here. Any ideas?

Also I’m open to all ideas- creative or non creative. The more the better because I have more choices. Also, if you can list a lot, I’m ready for it :)

Why not start with what you've got? Perhaps at any one of those venues, the door will open for more ideas.

Yes I agree and I was thinking that. There’s some choice already which is good. But I wanted to have EVEN MORE choices because chamber of commerce might be too early and I have to go to work on that day.

Toastmasters is really rundown in my city I’ve tried

So the short story is just in case I run out of opportunities I have some more to think about. I know I probably can think of some myself but wanted to take advantage of this forum. That’s why I came to a forum

It’s fine if others can’t think of an idea, I wanted to get a pool of ideas and any ideas are welcome

see if there's any open mikes near you. Big cities tend to have more, but most are friendly to spoken word types. It's definitely helpful.

You may need to give a presentation or a speech in front of your team or a group of people. Weeks before the speech, you get nightmares of forgetting the lines, and you wake up with cold sweat. No matter how much you practice, the jitters never go away.

Public speaking outcomes could include the following –

• Looking like muppet owing to nervousness
• Reading like a teleprompter
• Your tension could shake off the audience

The following steps will reduce your anxiety:

• Try not to calm down. Turn your fear into excitement. It is easier to convert a strong emotion like anxiety into another strong emotion like excitement.
• Practice in front of a small audience. Maybe, you could start with the group in your training.
• Practice at the venue. This will relatively reduce the fear.
• Know the audience who will attend your event.
• Public speaking must include some puzzle or story. This way, you engage the audience in the speech.

Hello Mate,

Am actually working on a public speaking online aid and am happy to help you practice you speech and get over that initial fear, no costs at all. I just know how it feels, it's something that I have battled with for such a long time and only now have gotten "mostly" on top of it.

Let me know if you are interested.

Have you checked out Speaker Slam? It's an Inspirational Speaking Competiton. They focus on a niche called Inspirational Speaking which is all about telling your personal story in order to inspire an audience with a message.

They recently went online during the COVID pandemic, so anyone in the world can compete. @SpeakerSlam
