Cant hold a job

Postby mrpersonality » Sat Jun 18, 2016 1:31 am

Ive been a diesel and equipment mechanic for about seven years now. Every 2-6 months Ive gotten fired for the last three years. I am either laid back (laughing and joking while I work) at work or very angry and irritable. I have a hard time getting things done alot of the time to time due being angry with my job, coworkers, manager or some other silly problem.

Im actually a very goofy person in reality though. This leads to people thinking that I am stupid. Ive had several concussion, had a large SUV fall on me and crush my hips, been poisoned by parts cleaners and other chemicals probably too many times, electrocuted badly twice and fallen of off equipment. Im very beat up and it shows. I get asked if I have "a few too many screws loose" quite often.

I just lost another job and Im not sure what to do. Is being a mechanic a source of my constant angry/bitter feelings at work?
Should I attempt another trade?
Just looking for some honest opinions.

An honest opinion, is that no matter what trade, if you are goofy, if you are angry, then you probably will not last very long.

I'm guessing, based on what you wrote, that for 2-6 months you manage to stay quiet and work. As with any new job, you don't feel comfortable right away, so when you start you keep your opinions to yourself. As you get comfortable and believe you are making friends you open up. When you open up, you start telling people your stories, your opinions, etc. You start talking about how things should be done, what is wrong with the business, you gossip a bit. This gets back to the bosses and they fire you.

One possible solution is to get a job and then try your hardest to use the quiet solution, also known as the just shut the f up solution. Don't tell people your stories, don't give your opinions, don't gossip. Be careful.

The reason I'm guessing this is the pattern is because of the repetitive cycle and you saying you are angry/goofy.

You know, I can agree with this. I appreciate the honest evaluation of my situation. Is there any other things you could think of that may help me in the future?

You might benefit from a mood stabiliser such as sodium valproate.

Good idea. I'm gonna go back a year and avoid the accident I had in September.
