Hi there, thanks for getting back to me, i have the same problem as you I have a fear of being sick so the panic attack brings it on even more, making me want to be sick, I have heaved lots of times but never sick. I know its me panicking that triggers it off even more. If i have eaten too much food this can make the panic attacks worse.......so now that i have a balanced diet things are looking better and i can control them.......hope this helps....

Hi natasha and joanna

What's so dreadful about being sick? Throwing up is the body's natural way of getting rid of something that disagrees with it, and also a natural way of responding to stress. What's the most awful consequence of being sick?

Hi,

i dont know what it is, I think for me it goes back along time when all our family had a bad stomach bug so no-one could help me and it frightened me so much. Now I can handle it at all, its my worse fears I get into a panic if someone says they feel sick as i assume I will get it. It has even gone as far as not been able to talk about certain things, such as squimish things cos I think it will make me sick. I know it sounds weird but I just cant cope with the thought let alone having to be.

Hi there again,.

with me its now a phobia of being sick, because to be honest i have never been sick in all my 29 years. I think i was when i was very young and caught a bug but cant remember to be honest. So because of this i now have an ongoing fear, i think for me its a fear of the unknown, a fear of being out of control and i wouldnt be able to control the sicknes..???
i know its a mind over matter issue here....its just me I know!!!

thanks anyway

Throwing up isn't exactly pleasant. It's uncomfortable, and it smells nasty. But that's all. In most instances of throwing up, you feel better straight after, as you have got rid of the problem. It's something you want to be able to do when your body needs to do it (which won't be often!).

You mention the worry that you have that you won't be able to cope. Why do you think you won't be able to cope?

Kathleen,

For me i think its the idea I have no control over it I cant stop and cant do it when i choose to do it. Also its the thought of people seeing me or hearing me being and making fun of me. i know it sounds daft but it is probably my biggest fear along with fainting or generally being ill. It makes me very upset just talking about it is making cry.

It's always important to remember that you can't control most of what your body does, and that is a very, very good thing. You can't control your blood pressure, your red blood cell count, your lymphocyte production, your hormonal balance, your digestion, your urine production... and on and on and on.

Anything that's connected to survival (like vomiting), we don't control - if we did, we wouldn't be here chatting about it on UncommonForum.

Seriously though, if you have such preoccupation with vomiting, it might be an idea to go and see a phobia specialist to get rid of it.

Hi :D

Fear of vomitting or 'emitaphobia' is extremely common. I've worked with people who won't fly-not because of a fear of flying but because of the fear that they, or someone else, may vomit during the flight. The percetrion of 'losing control' is at the heart of most panic conditions. Mis-using the imagination is also a way of scaring your self. The way out of fear is so often to 'get the imagination working for you.' By relaxing deeply and reviewing imagined vomit times and also working with someone skilled in the use of the rewind technique. You should be able to overcome this fairly rapidly.

And what do you say to those people? Because I am one of them and have 8 and a half hours of flying to do tomorrow and am extremely anxious about it!!!

Hi Lesley

So, you have eight and a half hours flying to do tommorow. What is it you have been worried about exactly? Is it the flying, the fear of being sick yourself or the thought that someone else might be?

Hey,

My problem is with the throwing up and seeing other people doing it. Last night I thought my mum was going to throw up (she coughed and kinda looked like it) and I literally ran away from the table upstairs and proceeded to have a panic attack

So it the fear of being sick.
