Benefits of Gabapentin

Gabapentin is dirt cheap now that Lyrica (Pregabalin) is now. It hits GABA but it's mechanism of action is different than benzos.

This is outstanding for patient's that cannot be hospitalized inpatient and has been used as an ambulatory detox option (along with other medications). Helps with withdrawal and cravings to alcohol. It also is sworn by many heroin addicts to greatly help mitigate some of the withdrawal of opioids.

Just thought I would pass that along as it's a pretty benefical drug for it's off label uses.

There are tons of people online that drastically exaggerate the withdrawal potential of this drug but I haven't seen it. It DOES have recreational and abuse potential in large enough doses. Again, it's a great adjunct to help patient's withdraw from alcohol and other drugs whilst getting concurrent treatment for their underlying etiology of addiction.
