I felt embarrased on stage and it hurts. What should I do?

Postby prami » Sun Aug 21, 2011 4:24 am

I had a student meeting today where each one has to introduce themselves. I used a wrong word and I was asked by couple of people there what does it mean. I said what for I used the word and ppl corrected me but in a kind of making fun of me. I feel so embarrassed even now and it is not being out of my mind. I feel so ashamed of what happened. How can I get through this feeling?

Hi Prami,
I can understand how you feel, but the embarrassment will ease off and you will soon be able to view this as a minor error. It is part of the learning curve that we all go through and adds to our experience. When I am running a coaching session I sometimes refer back to similar personal situations I suffered when I first started making presentations. It is apparent by the students comments that they have been there too - but it hasn't stopped them pursuing their aim to be better speakers. Take heart, and don't give up! Just as it is important to smile at your audience when you first start speaking, if you can accept being 'corrected' with a smile, it helps to 'take the wind out of the sails' of those who may want to make fun of you!

Hi Tony,
I went to bed with those thought but the intensity has gone down by morning. I feel even much better after seeing your reply. Thank you. :)

Either they were trying to help and the joking nature was an attempt to stop you feeling bad - in which case you don't need to worry about them 'cos they're nice folks...

or...

they're obnoxious prats and you don't need to worry about their opinion therefore!

This happened many times for me too..but i forget about very quickly..and i always laugh about it with my friends and fellows and i give them the feeling that it was funny not embarrassing..believe me there is a huge difference when you laugh about the situation with your fellow and when you try to avoid mentioning the situation and if some one mention it you give them the feeling that you are embarrassed and you want them to stop talking about it..

but i'm happy you forgot about.. :D

I did public speaking for many years, won awards, the whole shebang! I made mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes! Look at all the celebrities making millions of dollars who don't use proper grammar or who trip on stage, etc. This too shall pass. Be sure to let those who tease you that they are not perfect either! That usually makes people quiet down when you point out their mistakes
