Im not nervous still shaky voice when do public speaking

Postby Akila » Wed Jul 12, 2017 12:16 pm

When I do a presentation or speak for about 2 minutes in front of an audience, my voice starts shaking and gives ugly voice...But I'm not nervous...Still this happens...Some time I do good presentations, but some time I fail miserably.

Latest experience is that I did a 2-3 minute speech to the Corporate Management, and I miserably failed due to shaky voice, too much speed of the word delivery...But I'm not that kind of a bad speaker..still this happens.

This is really traumatizing...Please advice me on this how to get over this issue..

I remember in college that I would get so scared to talk in front of people. I was concerned because I was going to become a teacher, and I wondered how I would do in class as a professional. Well, I found out that I do just find. I would guess that you are new at this job. I think the more you do something; the more confident you will become. One teacher had suggested that while I waited for my turn that I should tense my body and release. I should do this over and over again. This would help to relax me. This seemed to work. As you get to know your fellow colleagues, speaking in front of them should get easier over time. This sure is a tough situation to be in. Focus on positive thoughts and try not to beat yourself up. I think our worst enemy is our own mind.

Do I understand this correctly? You believe you failed miserably because your voice was shaking? 2 points:
1. Others might think you're a little nervous and might feel for you and be more empathetic
2. If you weren't nervous, it could be that you need to strengthen your core and your diaphragm and improve your breathing.
Join a yoga class / Pilates or learn some breathing techniques. Hope this helps.

Perhaps speaking slower louder and pausing for breath. I have found that if you are not breathing properly that after 30 seconds or so the voice starts to shake because of the lack of breath and the body becoming more tense. Also, work on your posture and you can always practice in the mirror at home too which sometimes allows you to observe what is happening and where you are tense in your own body.

Perhaps this is caused by the unconscious beliefs you have of the situation. Perhaps at some level you feel that you are not worthy, that people want you to fail, that people think poorly of you unless you prove them wrong... This is very common, these are beliefs that you acquire in order to protect yourself. The consequences of doing poorly are important to you, so you unconsciously start to believe that you will do poorly to push yourself into being alert and on edge, and this underlying fear comes across in your voice. Some meditative practice or positive affirmations might help before your speak. Try to notice how you are feeling, if you are afraid or not, and tell yourself that you have nothing to be afraid of. Many times the "imperfections" we notice when public speaking are not picked up by the audience, and if they do notice they don't care as much as we think they do. You will be ok, kudos for pushing yourself to talk in front of many people, it is many people's main fear!
