Nail Biting - Is It Bad?

Postby paul1972 » Fri Jul 30, 2004 11:58 am

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering whether anyone can help me with something - a good friend of mine bites her nails really really badly, right down so she has no white tips, sometimes a bit more. She even picks at them with a pin sometimes, she says its to get some nail because she just cant stop.

Is it actually as bad a habit as everyone says? Should I try to stop her? Does anyone else here bite their nails and if so how badly? I've been told its really rare for females, is that true?

Anyway, hope someone can help,

Paul.

Hi Paul and a big wellcome to our forum :D

Firstly I don't think nail biting is rare in women at all. In fact it seems to be very common. It's only bad if it causes your friend problems and she would prefer not to do it.

As with any form of self-harm like smoking it is often carried out during times of stress or boredom. Of course for her body it would be better if the habit were not there.

Prespective friends, partners, employers may be put off by the sight of some one biting their nails-if it's done publically.

Has your friend told you she wants to quit?

Mark
