Answering the roll call anxiety

Postby dudeman74 » Tue Oct 11, 2011 10:05 pm

I know this is not exactly public speaking but I have a college class where the teacher calls the attendance every time, I usually don't get nervous when a teacher does this, but he calls the names very fast and doesnt look at your face so you can't raise your hand. I'm at the very end the anxiety just builds up and I can't even say here without saying 'um' or sometimes I today I couldn't even get a damn word out - a simple "here" until like 5 seconds later. I know my name is coming and the nervous tension just builds up and I might end up freezing. Even actual public speaking doesn't make me this anxious. Any advice? I would appreciate it.

ALso would medication help in this situation like propranolol, kava, valerian, etc? because I can use them,
or maybe alcohol so I just am not aware or care about this and don't get nervous.

Hi dudeman74,

I would not advise to try to treat anxiety wit drugs. This will only make you dependent on drugs without curing the underlying causes. Most people with anxiety suffer from hypoglycemia. Please read:

For some reason, waiting is one of the things that really gets to us. Our mouths get dry, our throats constrict, and, our minds go blank. All of which means you freeze up and, even if you can say something, it comes out as a squeak, at best. But, with a bit of practice, you can overcome it.

I suggest you first try to treat the symptoms:
-a candy in the mouth will help the dryness
- silently singing the "meow, meow" song will loosen your throat and ease your mouth muscles. [ Discretely place your hand in front of your mouth, then repeat the word "meow" several times opening your mouth wide like an angry cat. People may think you are just yawning; but, it really eases your facial muscles - and, eases a ton of anxiety.]

- Two things will help keep your mind in shape. Do some regular deep (down to the tummy) breathing. That not only helps you relax, it also sends more oxygen to the brain so you can focus. . . works well before exams, too.
-also watch carefully the next couple of times the prof calls roll and follow the pattern he uses. In that way. you'll have a better idea when to get prepared.
Good luck.

Hypnotherapy can help you with this as well as it is very effective with any anxiety related issues. I suggest finding a hypnotherapist in your area that treats anxiety,
good luck!

Hello,

I've seen similar anxieties disappear in just a few minutes with people I've worked with. If you want, we can schedule few minutes to see if we can get you over this. I'm willing to donate that time to you if you are willing to work with us. If it works for you great if not, if not, no harm done. Just shoot me a message.

1. just ask him to slow down. if you're feeling this way, then i bet there's others in the class that feel the same way. trust me.

2. breath, chill, and be confident. it's not like he can hurt you for not doing exactly what he wants.

3. id have fun with it.
