Physical Deepeners Vs Imagery

Postby Jenifahr » Thu Feb 12, 2004 2:01 pm

Hiya guys,

This one has been a bit of a problem for me for some time.

My partner, who really really would like to enjoy deep relaxation through hypnosis is a bit of a nightmare.

One of the main problems is that he knows too much - he had an interest in hypnotherapy before I did and therefore can be quite critical without meaning too... he certainly can't shut up his inner chatter. This really is a double bind because he wants to be able to experience the power of hypnotherapy but can never seem to let go enough and when he does manage to relax he never feels as if he goes very deep.

I have tried various different deepeners and have discovered that the ones that work best on him are physical ones, such as the arm drop. He seems to have a mental block on imagery and feels that it has to be in the 'here and now' for him to have a reaction to it. If he can't feel the image then he can't see it, and it seems that no matter how detailed you make the image, how many ways you appeal to the senses it just doesn't seem to help.

So, main point of topic - are there many other deepeners I could use other than the arm drop... eye catalypsy (sp?) also has its benefits but I was wondering if there was much more? Unfortunately even things like sticky hands don't work much because he has to 'imagine' that the hands are stuck together...

What is also so strange is that he normally has a wonderful imagination!

Argh!

Any help and advise much appreciated :)

Hi there

On the principal of 'encourage anything that the subject is doing' (within reason ;) ) I would work on getting him to focus more and more and the hypnotic language I was using, and to be more and more critical.

If he does as asked, his focus deepens and he goes into hypnosis, if he resists then he is stopping doing what you want him to stop anyway. Your very own bind :)

I agree entirely with Roger (co-incidently not as a point of principle :D )

Also ask him if he has any memories of dreaming. People tell you they can't visualise etc then recount amazingly vivid dreams. People tell me they are non-imaginative/creative but also dream which is a rich manifestation of both.

Ask him to spot all that you are doing and on no account become absorbed in any of his own inner abstractions. If some one pushes you pull, if they pull you push.

I shall give it a go...

On the dreaming front, he hardly ever remembers dreams - and if he does, they are always bad ones...

That's good - dreams are designed to be forgotten. The reason he only remembers bad ones is probably because the arousal levels are more likely to be high enough to wake him up.
