A theroy by Georg Cantor might have ruined my life.

i'm not sure if this will help. but...

don't try to prove anything one way of the other. don't try harder to stop obsessing. just let go & relax. in a similar way to how you relax your muscles.

Why is it that everyone says to me either "It doesn't matter" or "Let it go."?

Why don't people talk about the theory itself?

You want me to stop obsessing about it? Give me some scientific facts that suggest that this theory is wrong. If you want to help me then do that.

The human language may not be finite or infinite. Only those with the power to infinitely create things can do that which is none of us.
Language is only a means to express oneself and does not limit creativity. You will not need to learn all languages because they keep changing. It is possible for the whole world to use just one language.

On your belief, The truth is that nothing you write bring you closer to the same writing.

You have to note that infinity exists only because it can't be measured
The limiting number (26) is in it's way infinite.
Applying these beliefs , it is only possible for one possibility to exist if you put all the possibilities as one.

Possibility is infinite because it is created, created by the universe and the universe can create infinite possibility because it is a creator.

These are all just ideas but I think the last is the most credible.

because i know that you will never accept whatever answer i give you. & i don't feel like spending my time with you in an endless loop arguing with you about some theory that doesn't matter to me. if you want to spend your life worrying endlessly about things that don't matter then knock yourself out. but i don't care to join you.

I dont think there is limitation behind creativity,

But even if there is limitations, we still need creative people around because our emotions...

I dont think people search to read a weird book, that has nothing to do with other books, i think people want is a book that makes them feel good...

We have fears, hate, disappointments in life

But songs, movies, books have been good leaders to a positive state of the mind; they make us feel good and all these writires and artists have to continue their job..

Life without books, without songs would be weird....

A book makes me feel special, makes me feel good,

I'm not necessarily going to reject whatever answer you give me. And it doesn't have to matter to you. You just need to understand how much it matters to me.
I started this thread because I wanted to have someone say…
“This theory is a load of rubbish and here's a solid scientific fact that disproves this theory forever…”
The only reason I've rejected every other answer is because they tell me that this simply doesn't matter what I just worrying for worrying’s sake.
I know I've become obsessed with this but how else can I feel? How else can I feel when something so dearly important to me has been so viciously attacked?
I keep having this fantasy where I've strapped a bomb to my chest, gone on youTube and announced to the world that, unless somebody disproves the theory I will kill myself. Either way it works out fine for me because if the theory is true I simply don't want to live.
Please, somebody give me some solid scientific reason to disbelieve this theory.

ok well i can't give that to you. personally i don't know if the universe is infinite or finite. i have heard it is vast & appearing endless. that's enough for me. im not a physicist or anything, so that's about as much as i know - ie not much. but i think you're asking for something that is impossible. ie proving that something is infinite.

Tailspin wrote:He explained to me this theory, apparently based on the work by Georg Cantor, that there is an immensely large but finite number of possible different books that can be written, because all books are made out of combinations of letters and words on a page so there must be a finite number of possible books that can be written.
If you could only put one letter in a book you would have a maximum 26 different possible books. And the way things are is simply a much larger scale of this statement.

Your question is exactly what --
"Is the number of books that can be written finite or infinite?"
Are you implicitly putting limits on what a book consists of? (Define "book.")
If you are, then a limit implies finiteness.
If you aren't, then the number of books is limitless.

If you could imagine your creation, what would your creation be like?

Are you saying that to get around this problem, all we have to do is make books longer and longer?

That would make them so big that they would become completely impractical.

But actually someone on another website has just given me a possible reason to think that this theory might be wrong. .

Is anyone still watching?

If you are please help. I can't stop thinking about this every waking moment. I want to dismiss this theory as untrue, let it go and move on but I simply can't. If I don't get help soon I fear I'm going to crack.

Someone with the username danshawen said...

"This idea is for people who think along the lines of Stephen Wolfram. The many errors in his 20 year tome "A New Kind of Science", like the beginning of this thread, totally neglect E = mc^2, and that's just for starters. Matter is equivalent to energy; moreover, it cannot even exist without the operation of the Higgs mechanism, which derives of the energy of the vacuum. Energy does not have a finite number of states. Any arguments about this universe being comparable to finite automata are so much nonsense. The argument, if there is one, is entirely contained in your manifestly finite minds."

That made me feel better but then some other people came along and argued against it. One of them even said that all the debating i was doing was nonsense.

( How can a forum exist without a working quote function -- how annoying that is. )
*

Your mind is focused on a confusion and a distraction. So long as your are focused there, you will not create anything but confusion and distraction.

Suppose there is no way to answer this question to your satisfaction. What then?

I imagine that I'll go through life with uncertainty and occasionally having these spasms of despair like a recurring illness.

If everyone says that all possibilities are finite and there is no way around that then I might kill myself, because life would become unbearable

I'm imagining that the finiteness might make you feel confined, whereas infiniteness would make you feel free to be yourself, to be who you really are.

And if you can't have the liberty to be who you really are, you may as well not live. Similar to "Give me liberty, or give me death."
