Will a US counselor be able to get licensed/work in UK?

Postby saltlifeclint » Mon Nov 19, 2012 7:26 am

I have an MA (graduate degree) in Community counseling from what we call a CACREP approved school here in the states. It is pretty much the de facto standard for education for a licensure by any state here in the US (there is no national licensing).

I would like to work in the UK or in Europe as a counselor/social worker/caseworker. I am wondering if it would be difficult to meet the requirements without a UK based degree. Does anyone have any information that might help me out? Thanks.

There's a mob called UK NARIC, National Academic Recognition Information Centre. You send them your credentials and they write back and tell you what the equivalent is in the UK. They then offer you a certificate of comparability you can work with, and you pay for that.

It was £25 when I went through the process. I didn't pay for their certificate, I just flashed the letter offering it to me and that was acceptable everywhere.

Be warned, they will downgrade you. The UK and Australia (where I mostly live) apparently have an agreement to sneer at each other's qualifications, and no doubt it will be the same with your US degree.

Thank you for the information. I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I will check in with them. Now that I have been forewarned, I will downgrade my expectations a bit.
