cheers.
They are good for
high-performance athletes who do lots of physical activity, or for people looking to
eat very cheaply. In other words, they are a healthy way of getting tons of calories (healthier than eating tons of butter or a bag of sugar - which are also empty calories)
Why?
Because they have a lot of energy in a small/cheap ammount of food.
On the other hand if you are regular person who doesn't want to eat excessive calories (and get fatter) then you're much better off consuming nutrient dense foods such as berries, fish, vedgetables, etc.
Some cereals are good because they are havily fortified with vitamins, but 99% of the cereals on the market are also designed for maximum taste, rather than health, and therefore contain lots of sugar and other nasty stuff.
So in summary -
They are empty calories, but yes, they are probably one of the more healthy forms of empty calories.
They are not intrinsically unhealthy or bad for you - it's just that while you're eating tons of calories (bread, pasta, rice), why not get a ton of nutrients with them too? (blueberries, oranges, carrots)[/u]
