PTSD from labour and childbirth?

Is it possible to have PTSD from labour and childbirth? Almost 4 years ago I had a pretty horrible experience when I had my first (and only) baby. I can still remember it clearly like it was yesterday and sometimes have nightmares about it. I feel traumatized by how badly it went. Ever since my DS was born I have been afraid of hospitals and doctors and terrified at the thought of getting pregnant again. I love kids and really would like to have more but I don't know if I'll ever be able to.

Yes this is very possible. I was lucky enough to have relatively straightforward and "easy" labours with both my children but I would describe them both as traumas - so if you had a difficult time with yours undoubtedly it might affect you psychologically.

I would contact either your health visitor or GP and discuss this. Ideally you'd receive a short course of talking therapy to address the issue specifically. I know in my area the local children's centre have a counsellor on staff who offers low cost therapy to mothers of small children, and there are a number of other charities and therapists locally operating a sliding scale of rates. Perhaps there are similar organisations near you? I hope you find some support. Best of luck.
