Teenage Depression

Hi,

I wonder if anyone could offer some advice.
My 16 year old daughter is suffering from both depression and high anxiety. She took antidepressants for a few months, and it was easier to get through to her then, but she has taken herself off them. Whilst she was on the medication she agreed to counselling and had one session, which went well for her, but she now refuses to go back. She insists that there is nothing wrong with her, when she quite clearly has a problem.

I've had to send her to live with her Dad because the lying, stealing, and threatening behaviour has become unbearable, and I don't know how long he'll be able to cope with her. I want to help her, but at the same time I have the welfare of the rest of the family (we have 2 much younger children) to consider as well.

What on earth can we do?

Hi Alison

Firstly, I think it is important to say that it is often most difficult to help those closest to you. People often see problems within their family as their own fault, but we have to understand that it can be nigh-on impossible to help people unless they want to be helped and are prepared to work at it.

Having said that, it would probably help you to read the Depression Learning Path to hepl you understand how depression works.

If you can think about your daughter in terms of what you learn on the Path, and let us know about what factors you think might be involved in her depression, that would be good.

Best

Roger
