How long did you plan to stay?

I'm seeing a therapist about a work situation. At the end of my first session he asked how long I was planning to stay in the country I currently live in where I'm a foreigner. I was taken aback by this and felt offended. Am I reading too far into it? Is it appropriate for him to ask me this?

It doesn't seem like a question to offend, so yes imo you're reading too much into it. I can't imagine what you're reading into it in order to have been offended.

From the therapist's point of view there's no point beginning therapy with someone who's about to leave the country -- especially if the therapist expects long-term work, ie. the problem is complex.
