Weight Loss and Hypnopsis

Postby Donnad » Mon Sep 07, 2015 1:18 am

Hello all.

I am new to this forum and am wanting some advice/ help. I had hypnosis for smoking and I have been smoke free now for 5 years and 6 months. The day I walked out of the clinic, I never picked up a cigarette again and am so elated about this. I had been smoking since I was 13 and had been smoking for 36 years!

Because I was so successful with smoking program, this year I wanted to lose weight and exercise more through hypnosis.

I was very active up until I had a few major trauma's in succession and now just don't feel like doing anything.

I had a session last week but to date nothing has changed. Does anyone know why it isn't working for me so well like it did for stopping smoking? I am getting quite depressed about this. I used to enjoy the gym, badminton etc but now all I want to do is eat and sleep ...all day :(

The most likely reason is because you can't stop eating. With other addictions it is possible to literally stop, to literally never smoke again, never gamble again, never drink again. But for eating? You can't stop eating, it requires a greater degree of self-regulation.

So would it take a few sessions for it to work for me? also I asked for motivation to exercise more but that hasn't changed either ... the therapist I'm using told me to come back for an additional session for energy and exercise... would this help .. would be achieved quickly?

No one can answer that question in this forum. Motivations are not that simple. I realize you believe hypnosis was what caused you to stop smoking, but motivation is not that simple. If it were simple, then procrastination, weight loss, exercising or any other trait a person wanted to change would all be taken care of through hypnosis.

The reality is that hypnosis was only one of many causes in a chain of causes that helped you stop smoking. It was the tool you associate with final cause, because after the treatment your smoking stopped. You don't attribute any other factors to you stopping? No other motivations, no other catalysts? No other events in your life prior to seeking hypnosis as a cure?

I would recommend making sure you have everything else handled prior to considering hypnotism. By handled, I mean setting yourself up for success. Do you have the house stocked with healthy food, thrown out delivery menus, a gym membership, a workout routine, a process established? Is there anyway to improve your environment, such as a gym that is 5 minutes away instead of 30 minutes? Is there anyway to improve your process, such as scheduling workouts for first thing in the morning?

When you have those things in alignment, when you have set yourself up for success then maybe hypnotism might be more profitable.

Hello Richard,
Thanks for the detailed reply. I wanted to stop smoking and I focused my energies towards exercising. Two years after I quit I the 12km city to surf run - and I achieved that. I have a gym membership & I used to frequent almost 6 - 7 days a week & also played badminton socially . However as life happens it threw me several curve balls in succession and now I just don't have the energy to go to the gym, eat properly etc. I have put one weight which depresses me even more! I have a big dog whom I adore and I take him for a walk to the oval and play with him there but I used to go for 7km walk with him but now find that too exhausting so don't even do that!

So it sounds to me like circumstances when you stopped smoking were much different. Stopping smoking was prior to the "curve balls in succession" that you now contribute to a lack of energy. To me this means until you address the underlying curve balls, trying to hypnotize yourself to accomplish what you want in life will be difficult. My opinion, focus specifically on the curve balls. Whether this means going through the process of acceptance or other changes you may need to make.

Here's a secret of successful 'Stop Smoking' hypnotists: they only work with those clients who are ready to quit. If a potential client is on the fence about quitting, they send them home with plenty of suggestions to think about (including the suggestion to call them again when they are ready to quit smoking).

OK hi all.. so I went to my hypnotist yesterday and had a "top up" session .. and lo & behold went to to the gym 2 hours later & did a 45min cardio session. Wasn't tired, hungry etc.. I am so excited! Have a follow up session in a fortnight so yeah I am now feeling very positive about this. Thanks to all your help.

Hypnosis works differently, at different time. Not all sessions for all problems are equal. I am glad you are on track though

Ive been down this road. For me, rowing 6 days a week at 40 minutes each = 3 lbs per month loss. One year = 36 lbs. It is hard work, but worth it. Youll sleep better and keep the weight off.
