how can i assure that I do justice to those who need help?

Postby budding psycho » Fri Jun 10, 2011 6:49 pm

I am a graduate in psychology. I am passionate about the subject in all it's theoretical aspects and i aspire to become a clinical psychologist because I am interested in mental disorders.
Though we will have internship in hospitals for 3 months at the end of the course, I would like to know beforehand what all i should be prepared for, when it comes to really interacting with a patient.
I am a quiet and sensitive person and so, my family fears that I may not be good at counseling others. The reason I am confident that I will be able to do it, is that I sincerely believe that each person is born on this earth to help others lead better lives, and I want to do as much as I can.
But I need to do complete justice to the people who need help, so please could you tell me what kind of situations I should look out for, and what all constitute the right aptitude for being a clinical psychologist ?
Thanking you,
Me.

By the time you figure out how to do this you will be too old to do it.

It really requires a great deal of listening. Reflection and interacting with others is an important part of the job.

Clinical psychology is a great field and will be very profitable for you in terms of your emotional investment.

Realize that speaking skills and communication are not 'gifted' to you but rather can be developed into something beautiful.

Tell me more about your specific challenges. What is an obstacle you see in your ability to practice?
