Extreme panic for no real reason-how to overcome ?

Postby ced316 » Tue Mar 09, 2021 12:22 am

Insight - I've been training bjj (brazilian Jiu Jitsu) for a number of years. I've also competed in several events previously.

this week, we had a belt promotion which only happens once a year. Going into this event, I already knew I wasnt going to get anything, because my coach told me in so many words, your day is coming within the year, just keep doing what I'm doing. however, the night before the belt promotion i was literally up all night long, dry heaving, vomiting and had extreme stomach pains. I was dizzy when I got up and I could not keep so much as water in my system.

The promotion comes and goes and I feel at least relieved for what ever reason ; my instructor came up to talk and basically he said that in time my day will come also, reaffirming what he said previously. However, he suggested that I go back out and compete again and 'see what happens'.

The thought of competition restored all that thought and feeling of dread, anxiety and paralyzing fear. I had to use some grounding techniques to calm down as if I was in fight or flight.

I have no idea why this is happening. I cant get around the deep down feelings of dread in situations like this. Is there anything I can do to over come this fear or what ever? has anyone else over come stuff like this ?

Hey!
I know the situation where you are. Just breath, deeply. Relaxing your body can help sidestep a panic attack and also concern with the medical marijuana doctor. You can apply for a medical marijuana card and get your treatment.

You can’t ‘get around’ what you are creating, but you can create the experience you want, that feels good to you.

Essentially, there is no ‘fear’. “Fear” is a word, a label, which you are applying to feeling. This makes it seem, to yourself, that the issue is the feeing, when really the feeling is guidance, letting you know about what you’re thinking. Remove that label, and listen to what feeling is saying, about what you are thinking. The more you are willing to feel, the more you will realize what you are thinking about yourself is not true, and this is why it feels so ‘off’.

The thoughts you’re focused upon are about you, in a future. This feels off, because you are not in a future. You are present, ‘where’ feeling is. More specifically and literally, you are what feeling is.

You can ‘go to a future’ in thoughts (seemingly), but feeling is always and only ever-present, and can never be ‘in’ a future.

When we ‘go to a future’ in thinking, and attempt to feel better...we are ‘leaving’ (in mind) ‘where’ feeling actually is. It is like saying “I will feel better now, as long as this goes well in the future”. This is mentally holding a condition upon good feeling, which is present now. Anytime you do this, it will feel off. If you repeatedly do this, feeling will ‘bring you to’ the now. To label this guidance of feeling twice over, as a ‘panic attack’, is to deeply miss the simple message of feeling - let go of the thoughts which you are focused on, which do not resonate with you.

Thank you for the responses.

so first, can marijuana actually help in situations like this overall? I mean, a drug is a drug - i have a medicine cabinet full of xanex but , that is a pill. options are welcome

and the second post, to clarify , feeling the emotions as I have them without worrying about the future context would relieve those terrible moments of panic. its essentially taking the punishment today of something in the future that might not even happen

I don't know. I would only warn against medicinal use of anything addictive, especially if the side-effects are worse than the complaint.

You can’t get around what you are creating. To ‘get around it’, become aware of how it’s created again and again, via identifying with the outcomes. If you win, it is Good. If you lose, it is Good.
