What if our bodies are just the mechanism for keeping our consciousness in the world?
I believe consciousness is the most important aspect of existence. All religions say consciousness is immortal, and virtually everyone believes in continuity after physical death. A lot of people say they don't, but if you listen to them long enough you find their conversation includes ideas like previous lifetimes, heaven and hell, the belief that they'll see dead friends and relatives after death, the belief that dead friends and relatives are watching them now...
If our brains, ie. the grey matter that supports consciousness, are all that counts, it's laughable how much emphasis we put on the body: how it looks, how we dress it to make it attractive to others, how we indulge it with food, drink and sex.
Your consciousness is made up of everything that's ever happened to you, what you've seen, where you've been, and how you've made sense of everything... or not. It's consciousness that makes us all unique. Between us we know everything there is to know.
The secret of life? It's different for everyone. It's what you decide it is.
I really like that picture you posted of the stars. Some of us find it tough to go on for years dragging around the equipment that maintains our consciousness, don't we?
