Great help on my PowerPoint presentation skills

Postby DavidSherrill » Mon Oct 01, 2012 5:29 pm

One thing that really bothered me is my presentation skills in front of my peers. I was extremely nervous and shaky when I had to present, I begin to sweat, my face turns bright red, and I just feel like a mess at the end of it. Being a college student was nerve-wrecking enough, but looking like an idiot in front of your peers during a 10 minute presentation was even worse.

So i began looking into different ways that I can simulate a real-life presentation. I began researching on what tools I can have in order to help me practice and hopefully make me less nervous in front of my peers, and I came to see that if I can simulate a presentation as the best as I can I can do it!

I came up with a list of things that is there while I am presenting, and I began to check off the things that I had and didn't have: computer, projector, teacher, students. I had a computer, I had my roomates (students) and I had my big brother (teacher). All I needed was a projector to practice my presentations.

I began to look into projectors that were cheap, and I came across a M2 projector from Amazon. It was a lot cheaper than most projectors, it's easy to use, convenient, and it was basically a replica of my projector that I used at school (but smaller). I began using this to practice, and I found out after several times practicing, it helped my nerves so much! I can really say that I have found a way to calm my nerves.

I just wanted to share with you guys my experience how much these tools have helped me with my presentations, and I hope it can help your nerves too!

The tools that you mentioned were of big help to me to when I did presentations but one this that I learned is that you need to start speaking publicly so that when you present something it will go hand in hand with what you are speaking...

Can you not just point to the pictures on screen? Like maybe type up word docs that summarises the point you are trying to make?

Hi David

It's great to hear how practicing with PowerPoint helped you to calm your nerves.

Preparation, either with or without PowerPoint, always plays a big part in helping to overcome public speaking anxiety. Although I've been speaking professionally for years, even I get a bit nervous if I'm not prepared.

There's nothing like practice and rehearsal to make any talk go well. When using PowerPoint though, remember that it should be just a visual aid and not the whole of the presentation.

Congratulations on finding a solution to your anxiety and keep up the good work :-)
