Throat Issue and I Think Panic Issue

Postby Neciee » Fri Jul 28, 2006 5:28 am

Lately my throat has felt really tight. There has been a feeling of something that feels like a heart beat in my throat. It pulsates for awhile then the pulsating leaves but my throat becomes sensitive after the pulsating is gone. Tonight my throat feels tight, even as I turn my head from side to side and up and down.

Also, this morning I had what I think was a panic attack. Initially my body felt different all over as if I was about to fall out. Then slowly my heart began to race, and I started hypervenilating (at least I believe I was hypervenilating).... Although this has happened to me about four to five other times, this morning again I dialed 911 but then I realized nothing serious occurred in the other instances so I immediately hungup the phone. About 10 minutes later the police arrived at my door so I had to explain.

I just joined this site. I google the terms, "tight throat feeling" and this site appeared. So I hope someone can give me some insight. Last, I know you will be hearing from me a lot because I have so many issues. See below:

A son with whom I am trying to figure out
Tumultuous relationship with my mother
Childhood incest
Men issues, men issues and did I say men issues
Friendlessness
And I lost my job after nine years in December

After reading this please let me know whether you believe this is the site for me.

If that happened to me, I would see a doctor. You are right...if the panic soon goes away then it is not an emergency. A doctor can check for physical causes of your symptoms, and work with you to find the right treatments. To get completely cured, it sounds like you might need some psychological treatment.

It is a bad idea to use any Internet site as a substitute for professional medical advice. This site is good for information and support. I hope you'll keep coming back to let us know how you get on with everything, and maybe even to help other people here who have similar difficulties.

Thank you for responding. I will certainly be back because I like using the site for support. I do understand that it is not a place to get medical advice. Sometimes I just like to know if others are experiencing similar issues.

The book sounds interesting

Hi Neciee,

Yes you are at the right web site. You will hear a lot of different theories as to the causes of anxiety attacks.

Mine is based on the study of biology. The feeling of tightmess of the throat is caused by the activation of the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) triggered by excess adrenaline.

Please read:

Beating Anxiety and Phobias.

For a alternative interpretation.

Hi sounds like you have an anxiety disorder. You are having panic attacks and the symptoms you describle are typical.

you need to see a doctor and get referred to a therapist, possibly a CBT one.

The more you focus on the problem the more attacks it is likely to trigger.

Relaxing more, letting go, having distractions and taking plenty of exercise are practical steps you can take.

your body is only responding to you thoughts and anxieties.

Thank you so much. I do plan to see a specialist. What is a CBT?

In the fall of '05 I tried to see a therapist. They put me in a group therapy session and I am a very private person. Also, the therapist at the Ridgeview location here in the Atl was very bad for me. He allowed another group member to curse me out in the presence of all the others. I was thoroughly embarrassed, and felt I did not deserve that kind of treatment. Later when I asked him about it, his response was, "well it may not have been good for you but it was good for her...." I have not been back to the place. During the 4 weeks there, there were 4 suicides. One of the women was in my group. She tried to communicate with the therapist but he would not listen to her. It was the first thing I noticed after becoming a part of the group. The gentleman really should not be in the psychological field at all. There are other things I could share but not here.....
