PTSD - Hello

Postby Tony2 » Wed May 12, 2004 8:52 am

Hi everyone-

Just a quick note to introduce myself.

I've been diagnosed with PTSD and it's been a tough few months!

In my quest to "make sense of it all" I'm trying to learn as much as
I can about psychology and trauma.

I look forward to following the posts in this forum.

Hi Tony! Welcome to the forums!

You didn't say what your PTSD related to - would you share? Have you been having difficulties for long? How does it show up in your life?

PTSD symptoms can often be helped using techniques like the Rewind Technique - this allows people to review traumatic experiences and remove the emotional states associated with the memories. Many of the therapists associated with this site know how to use this process, and maybe it would be useful for you too!

Kathleen, thanks for your reply.

I'd be uncomortable about openly posting details of the trauma but it relates to an event that hapened 10 years ago, so it's pretty deep-seated.

Hypervigilance is the biggest problem. Constantly assessing physical dangers, especially outside, is still a big problem.

Thanks for the information on the Rewind Technique, I'll do some research on that one.

I wonder if you could help me on one point please? Do you think it's appropriate for a mental health social worker to offer PTSD treatment. Mine wants to explore the book "Overcoming Traumatic Stress" with me. This is because the waiting time to see a specialist is around 8 months.

Thanks in advance for any views anyone can offer

Hi Tony2

Kathleen's advice is good. PTSD can often be resolved by quickly by a correctly-trained practitioner. Unfortunately many do not know how to treat PTSD quickly, and consider it a long-term treatment proposition.

The Rewind technique is similar to the V/K dissociation technique which most people with NLP training should be able to use. However, as with any technique, the important thing is that the practitioner has experience and ability, so you should check that out before choosing who to see.

PTSD is terrible, but it can be alleviated very quickly indeed and the symptoms completely eradicated. These may sound like strong words, but many here will have seen it work themselves.

The best of luck to you

Roger

Hi Tony2

I don't know the book you mention, so can't comment on it. I would back up Roger, though, and say that PTSD can be treated effectively and quickly. It doesn't have to be a long slow process!

You might also find it helpful, while you are figuring out what best to do, to take the Panic Attacks Course - this could help a lot in reducing the feelings of anxiety.

All the best
