The use of "my" or "our" in a group organization

Postby AJCampbell » Tue Mar 05, 2019 7:27 am

I am the leading founder of a charity organization and I have come to a crossroads of sorts. When speaking in public, i will often times say "my organization" or "The organization that I founded." I've since wondered if this was wrong to say since there is about 5 unpaid people that passionately volunteer to moderate and aid me in the charities, planning, carrying out, and directing. Further, there is about 15 others that lend their unpaid volunteer time towards carrying out these charities. I would never be able to be successful without them. I feel as though I should say "my charity" because I have the strongest network and influence, but I wonder if I should say "our organization" so that I don't seem selfish with delusions that I do it on my own. Also, to give thanks and acknowledgment to the folks that volunteer their time. I dont want to be a Bono, so to speak.

"Our" makes more sense in this context. If I were considering making a donation, a speaker saying "my organisation" would give me pause for thought. Apart from anything else, an organisation is always a conglomeration of people's input

Personally I'd be more inclined to use the charity's name rather than "our organisation". You can't have too many repetitions of it.

You can give yourself credit and still find opportunities to acknowledge others. Think about the effect and impact of the usage. Sometimes you will have more of an impact on people when they see it as your personal message - more human-to-human than some organization.

You could try to discussing this with your team and see how they feel about it.

I also agree with the use of "our". Feels more right in context
