A joke for the start of the speech

Postby AlexMatei2000 » Sat Feb 03, 2018 5:09 pm

Hi, I'm Alex.
I need your help to make a joke for the beginning of the speech.
So, I have a speech about success. I'm going to start it like "Once, i was navigating on the internet, and found a story that seemed interesting ... ", and then I will start the story, but i want to say a joke before the word internet on around there somewhere. I've thought of something like " i' was navigating on the internet, like all the adolescents of today, i wouldn't get up even if i was starving..." or something like this, but this is a bad joke, and my mind could not think of something better.
So can you help me with this simple thing ? By the way , I'm 17 years old, and I study to a informatics college, if it is helpful in some way.

Jokes are very subjective. Tread cautiously. If you go w/a joke it may be better not to go w/a full on joke as compared with trying to just lighten the mood a little....Take it easy. Smile and others will smile with you. Focus on a great speech first.

I agree with publicspeakingnyc. Jokes aren't always well received by your audience and the timing would have to be spot on. Better to be yourself and bring some light humour into your speech rather than telling a full on joke.

Hey dude, I recommend you to not force a joke, the funniest moments are moments that happen spontaneously and naturally. Personally, whenever I tried to tell a joke in the sake of telling a joke it turned out pretty awkward and cringe. Be calm and collected, believe in yourself and your words. Go with a mindset: I will speak today and it is going to be amazing. I believe in you and you believe in yourself. Now go kick that speech's a**.

This is a very late to the party post however ..... People here are correct; do not make jokes. Do not ever force humour.

The best way to start any public speaking is to be 'collective' .....

"When I was asked to speak here today I felt honoured and excited to take part ...."

"To simply to be a part of this fantastic occasion and talk with all you wonderful people, is a real honour"

"On a such a joyful occasion, it is wonderful to look out and see so many happy faces gathered here to celebrate this amazing couple"

Do not ever embark on lewd, supposedly humorous stories about the Bride, Groom nor anyone else.

Always try to bring the audience into you and along with you, say things they will (or should) agree with.

If someone is a naturally humorous person and expert raconteur: that person knows it ... so they naturally use quality humour.

Unnatural humour is never successful. Meanwhile 'jokes' are horrible and belong only public toilet doors or the stage of a comedy club.

I'll tag along as a late response as well and share my experience, but I learned early on in public speaking (I'm going into my seventh year) that the best laughs I got were with light, spontaneous, and natural humor, which I like to use in my talks often and it's worked well. I tried forcing a joke once or twice in a talk and did not receive any laughs :) Even though I recovered nicely by pausing for a second and then saying with a smile, "I figured I'd get a laugh out of that," (which, by the way, my audience laughed at how I made fun of myself briefly) I really should have just presented the information without trying to be funny.
