Amplified Noises :?:

Postby latic » Sun Mar 14, 2004 9:45 pm

For the past few years I have noticed that when I am in public settings unusual noises will seem amplified. It is usually background noises of some sort. It was infrequent at first, but now is happening almost daily it seems. Today in church as the choir sang, they were literally drowned out by the noise of ruffling papers and the movement of people. This is not logical I know because that background noise drown out the forefront noise, but it happens constantly. I also work in a public school lunchroom. At any given time there is ~ 300 students in the cafeteria. At times the childrens voices become blurred into one noise and is greatly amplified almost as in a cartoon voice. It is almost disturbing. My brother suggests it is noises that are a source of irritation that get amplified, but I disagree. Sometimes it seems this is the case, but not always. I am thinking it is anxiety, but I do not know if I need to worry about it or just deal with it as I am. It is not debilitating although it can be disturbing or bothersome as today in church when I wanted to focus on the choir and could not. Suggestions would be helpful

As a first step, I would suggest you rule out a hearing problem. There are some hearing problems that can make an individual hypersensitive or hyposensitive to certain frequencies or harmonics, etc., and it may be that something of the sort is causing this phenomenon in your case. At the very least, i think it would be best to look possible physical bases before speculating as to a psychological basis.

Thanks Minstrel, I will call today. That was my first thought as well, but my family automatically ruled that out. Thanks!
