Public Speaking Question

Even accomplished speakers will have some fear when they are about to give a speech, so some anxiety is necessary to avoid a flat presentation.

What happens is that for novice speakers we let this take over.

Firstly I would ask you to get in touch with the emotion. :(

Say to yourself, “Right now I feel terrified, AND that’s OK!!! :D
Say a few times , even though it’s through gritted teeth. :D

What this process does is help you accept the emotion.

Based on what you deny, controls you.

In my experience, I change nervouseness to excitement. By the time I deliver a speech, I am so excited to tell the world my message and am focused on the key points and remembering what it is I hope each person will take away.

I had one occassion when I looked out into the audience and my right leg shook so much I had to lean down and hold it in place, took a couople of deep breathes and calmed myself. In hind sight I was not convinced i was properly prepared.

Now I open each speech by saying:
"May the words that flow though me, and the emotionas and feelings of my heart, be the greatest gift in your life right now."

The fact is my talk and any speakers talk is the greatest gift they can give humanity right now in the here and now. Your message is your very best on talk day. People will start thinking about your words and how they apply to themselves. I am often surprised that what I think is important is not necessarily what each individual thinks is important. Regardless your words are your greatest gift which makes our world a much better place because you had the courage to prepare and present.

Joseph, you are absolutely correct.

Just by wanting to give a speech you are already ahead of the majority of the people on this planet.
And very single one of us something to share that is of value to the world.

Gerald,

There are several things that I do to help me when I have to speach in public.

First, I rehearse a general idea of what I am going to say. When I rehearse my speak, I pretend that I already have the audience in front of me so that I do the speak for the audience, I feel as though I have already done this over and over so its nothing new.

Second, I try to make things interactive. This way I can put questions out to the audience. I try to creat a diagalog then just discuss............it puts me more at ease. I try to focus on just the one person with whom I am speaking then move onto another person. This tends to put me more at ease.

Hope those suggestion helps!!

I think that there is so much good information on this forum, it really is worthwhile going back through and trusting the information that resonates with you.

And only do one step at a time.
